  Do no harm的脑外科老爷爷又来了。上一本比较像回顾性病例总结，都是紧张刺激的手术实录。这一本就更偏回忆录性质，退休了的医生自己走下了神坛，把自己过往为情所困、迷茫绝望、错误百出的那一面都毫无保留地展现给我们看（但是想看手术的读者也不会失望～）。从他在尼泊尔、美国和乌克兰行医的经历可以看到不同文化背景下人们对于疾病的看法和对医生的诉求有多大的差异。而关于医疗纠纷和医院行政管理的部分也尤得针砭之术。他还写了工作间隙的乘象出游、异国的节庆、退休后动手改造买下的旧屋，其中穿插的对于过往病人的回忆毫不突兀，是很会写的医生了。或许是看多了脑子，脑外科医生对于生命和死亡的认识蛮不同的，并且很有跨物种的共情能力。两本都很喜欢。老爷爷真是有医术有医德有人文情怀。

  I had passed the long hours by the window watching thefall.Ithough as the cme of themanyyears Ihad spent teachinghm.But on on of myewo years later I heard,only by accident,that the woman haddied some months after the operation,from a post-operativenfection in her brain.His silence over this,and the way in whichhe had not sought my advice when she fell ill after the surgerymade me furious and I came close to telling him that I wouldnever return to Ukraine,but eventually I thought better of it.Iwas told later that he had thought I would refuse to come backto Ukraine if he did tell me,which was,of course,the completeopposite of the truth and showed how little he understood me.It reminded me of the long delays before the Soviet governmentadmitted to the catastrophe at Chernobyl.
