  事实是，种族是美国生活中一个永恒的因素。但是，对每件真实或想象的事件做出反应会令人疲惫不堪，最终也难有建树。我长大的家庭环境中，有一个信仰：你也许不能控制你的环境，但你可以控制你对环境的反应。摆出受害者的姿态，或者依靠“白人”来照顾你，都是不可能的。自立是我父母两边家族的祖先们留下来的根本道德立场，已经成了我的一部分。尽管我的祖先们曾面临赤裸裸的不公，但进步的确存在，而今天种族也不再是个人成就的决定因素。尽管如此，美国并非无视肤色，以后也不可能。种族总是在那儿的，像个天生的缺陷，无法消除，你只能与之共处。
