  The public Ray Dalio exhibited a pair of qualities that may not have seemed complementary, but often worked in tandem. He was a big-hearted billionaire eager to help others improve their lives by following his principles. He was also evidently in need of reaffirmations himself because, to the masses, he portrayed himself as someone constantly under attack.The alternative reality was neatly illustrated in early 2020 when The Wall Street Journal wrote a piece noting that despite constantly dangling the prospect of his handing off control of Bridgewater, Dalio always seemed to stick around.

  He had apparently been able to overcome his own such reflex. Through meditation. Dalio said he was able to all but separate the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, thus freeing himself from being controlled by emotion. He credited this ability for hi s understanding of the psychological factors that lead to successful trading and company management. Dalio offered to subsidize meditation classes for anyone at Bridgewater who wanted to follow in his path. May took him up on the offer.
