  Suppose you do well in school. Then a natural idea is to try to go to college. Then if you have no particular urge to jump into "Real life" (whatever that is), you will proceed to a PhD. And when you are through with that, academic life will probably be real life for you. It will be hard to imagine something else. Through lack of imagination you will try to stay in academia and "do research," among other things. But good research also requires a large amount of routine work, often delicate and complex, that has to be done with care, with precision, and without undue imagination. At the root of science and scientific research is the urge, the compulsion, to understand the nature of things.
