This probably has its roots In our being creatures of air and water and these are the colors associated with these elements of nature. On the other hand, the colors of the yellow-to-red range are the colors of light and fire radiations, which move toward us as emissions of heat and light. And so our reactions to these two color groupings are on the one side calm attraction and on the other side excited response, such as are our feelings toward water and fire, sky and sun.

Joan2021-02-25The colors of the color wheel that are directly opposite one another are called complementary colors, and much is made of them in the color theories that do not derive from a study of nature and the after-image colors. These complementary colors do have a contrasting effect and can enhance one another. But since their relationship is only derived from being geometrically opposite one another in a manmade arrangement of manufactured colors, they do not have the charged, vibratory effect that the after-image color progressions have on their optical partners. The concept of complementaries is a static one because the color relationship is said to go back and forth between the two colors like an eternal ping-pong game This does not correspond to the way that colors occur in nature, since nat...

Joan2021-02-26Each persons reaction to color differs according to sex and period of life. Each person has what might be called his own color-harmonic scale; these are colors that reflect the individuals Character and moods. A person may be aware of these colors or they may be a subconscious part of his personality. The more attuned to color the individual is the more consciously will he use these colors to enhance his person and his environment, or in the case of a painter, his pictures. Since these color choices emerge from the subconscious, the individual may select and arrange perfectly beautiful combinations by pure unconscious instinct if he is sensitive to color. On the other hand, people who do not use color frequently or who have suffered from big doses of "color fatigue" can be the prey of the...

Joan2021-02-26The light skin is translucent and it tends to show the colors underneath more readily than the darker skins which are more opaque. In addition to this the light-skinned human shows more clearly the emotional responsive colors because of this translucency. The surface of all people can become red with heat or embarrassment, purple with choked rage or alcoholism, blue with cold, green and yelow with sickness or envy, but the lighter skin color is, the more visible these emotional responsive colors are.
