The object was to make them identify more with British interests than with Indian interests. This was done in a very subtle way. The British would unhesitatingly serve Indian officers whether in political administration or commercial administration. I don’t think this happened with other empires, and it still doesn’t happen with foreign companies operating in India. French or American or Japanese companies almost never have one of their nationals serving under an Indian.

  最早开始写作的时候，我以为我将只写小说。在我看来，成为一个驾驭想象力的作家是最高贵的事情。但写完几本书之后，我发现我的素材——我脑海中的素材、我的背景最终所能给予我的素材——不足以支撑我的抱负。这种抱负源自我所了解（或我自以为了解）的十九世纪欧洲的伟大小说。我说得那么谨慎，是因为在开始写作之前，实际上我并没有大量阅读。我现在明白了——我想这是我一直有所感受但不曾明确成形的观念——那些小说诞生于比我所处的世界要远为壁垒分明、智识上有序并充斥着各种信念的社会。假装自己来自一个同样完整有序的世界，在某些方面会使写作变得容易一点。我所讨论的秩序，简单来说就是常规，是确定了电视情景喜剧基调的有限舞台。这个有边界的舞台的规则非常少，也容易理解；混乱的外部世界没有侵入并消除其中的魔法。我可以尝试那样写作。但若如此，我将无法更进一步。我将不得不过分简化，回避很多东西。这将与我作为一个作家所设定的目标相悖。
