  As organisms, we have some very basic responses to colors. We are attracted visually toward the blue range and we are drawn into it. This probably has its roots In our being creatures of air and water and these are the colors associated with these elements of nature. On the other hand, the colors of the yellow-to-red range are the colors of light and fire radiations, which move toward us as emissions of heat and light. And so our reactions to these two color groupings are on the one side calm attraction and on the other side excited response, such as are our feelings toward water and fire, sky and sun.

  The colors of the color wheel that are directly opposite one another are called complementary colors, and much is made of them in the color theories that do not derive from a study of nature and the after-image colors. These complementary colors do have a contrasting effect and can enhance one another.
